Mentors

Once you have paid your membership dues and attended either the pull clinic training or a meeting, then you may inquire about our mentoring program. Mentors are members of Cascade Sled Dog Club who are committed to helping new mushers get started. We have several mentors experienced in all aspects of dog-powered sports, so once we know a bit more about you and your dogs, we can best match you to the appropriate mentor.

A few Notes about Mentoring

Mushing is one of the few dog sports left that you cannot pay someone to do it for you. A mentor will not run your dog for you. They will introduce you to the equipment and set you up for success with their advice, but you will still be responsible for working your own dog.

A friendly reminder-

The most user-friendly introduction to the sport is the Pull Clinic. After the Pull Clinic though, you will need a snow ready vehicle to continue learning and the right gear to keep yourself warm.

This sport takes place when it is cold (under 50 degrees F) for the safety of the dogs. That means many of the runs will be very early in the morning (7am) or late at night. To learn from experienced people, you may have to get up quite early on the weekends and invest in a good head lamp.

If you commit to run with someone show up, and when you are learning from someone, you are working with their schedule. Many of our mentors are training for competitive races and working with more than a few dogs. Their time is valuable, so try to be punctual and always proactively communicate if you can’t make a meet-up.
